On Wednesday, August 12, the Community Engagement Advisory Board and City Staff hosted the City's first Boards and Commissions Expo. The Expo was an opportunity for members of the community to meet and learn about the City's various boards, commissions, and committees. This event provided an opportunity to ask questions and sign up to help guide Duncanville's path forward.

Rental Weekly Inspection Report
40 Rental inspections were Scheduled this week; 0 passed while 40 failed and 0 were canceled. The primary reasons for the failed inspections were absence of GFCI protection, missing carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, ground rods and water heaters were not up to current code.
A total of 0 Single Family Rental Certificates of Occupancy has been re-issued and 4 Apartment complex Units were inspected for this week and 0 complaints.

Take the Duncanville Better Block Survey
This fall, the City of Duncanville and Better Block will temporarily reimagine the South Main Street corridor at East Wheatland Road to explore safer streets, stronger connections, and more vibrant public spaces.
The demonstration will test ideas like traffic calming, safer pedestrian crossings, outdoor seating, public art, and community gathering spaces to better connect Downtown Duncanville, Armstrong Park, nearby neighborhoods, businesses, and civic destinations. Throughout the project, community feedback and data will help inform future investments and long-term improvements along the corridor.

Emergency Management Services (EMS)
- Attended the 2027 Special Events Data Call with the North Central Texas Council of Governments.
- Working with all 4 cities to submit their lists of special events for 2027.
- Emergency Management Specialist Bradley attended the Regional Emergency Managers Meeting where he serves as Secretary.
- Emergency Management Specialist Bradley and Emergency Management Coordinator Sanchez attended the National Homeland Security Conference. Sanchez presented at the conference on the Regional Emergency Management Support Team. Picture attached.
Fire Administration
- At City Council Budget Workshop, funding of $67,500.04 to purchase two Lucas Devices for mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation was approved.
- Attended Southwest Regional Communications Center monthly meeting with fire chiefs on August 12.
- Attending a Better Block Police and Fire coordination meeting on August 13.
- New Mattresses have been ordered for Stations 1 and 2. Delivery expected August 10 for Station 1 and Station 2 on August 24.
- Sent email to Darren Juhase at Fleet to discuss sending fire vehicles to Metro Fire Apparatus in Cedar Hill in the future due to a lack of certified Emergency Vehicle Technicians at Fleet. He agreed on August 5 and he urged to wait if possible until October 1 with Fiscal Year 2027 budget.

On Friday, August 7, 2026, the Duncanville Police Department proudly celebrated the promotions of two members of our team.
Lieutenant Green was promoted from Sergeant to Lieutenant and will serve as the Day Shift Patrol Lieutenant.
Sergeant Williams was promoted from Officer to Sergeant and will serve as the Professional Standards Sergeant.

Children and families, on Monday, August 17, Homeschool Hangout is back (11 AM – noon), along with Pokémonday (4:30 – 7:30 PM), and Chess Club (6:30 – 7:30 PM)! What is Pokémonday? Celebrate 30 years of Pokémon with crafts and activities for the whole family! Create your own Pokémon, choose your starter, and catch them all!
On Tuesday, August 18 (5:30 – 7:30 PM), adults and teens (ages 12 and up) go on Old-School RPG adventures in the Game On! Special Edition program. If you’ve never played a role-playing game before, this beginner-friendly event is a great introduction.
The Friday Foliage program returns with Fall Seeds on Friday, August 21 (3 – 5 PM). Get your fall garden started with paper roll seed starters in this hands-on program! Learn how to upcycle these cardboard tubes and which plants to try for fall vegetables or herbs in north Texas. This program is for all ages. Open to ages 5 and up.

Parks
- Crews mowed all athletic fields at Harrington, Alexander, Lions, and Lakeside twice during the week.
- Staff completed mowing and grounds maintenance at City Hall, City Hall Annex, Recreation Center, Library, Police Station, Little Shenandoah, Big Shenandoah, Main Street Fire Station, Quail Run, and Lions Park.
- Crews finished mowing the wildflower areas at Nichols Park and Walnut Circle and assisted Parks Maintenance with cleanup of the Brookside Drive property.
- Crews completed topdressing of the Harrington athletic fields and cleaned excess sand from the rear parking lot.
- Crews completed playground inspections at Lakeside, Alexander, Harrington, Lions, and Waterview and checked park areas for wasp activity.
- Staff checked trail lighting at Lions and Armstrong Parks, completed signage work at Armstrong, installed five signs for the soccer association, painted over graffiti at Harrington, and measured for an upcoming fence replacement.
- Crews continued landscape maintenance at City Hall, Police Department, and City Hall Annex, including weed removal, shrubs and tree trimming, sucker removal, bed cleanup, and general landscape maintenance.
- Crews treated nutsedge in landscape beds near CVS, QT, and Ferguson Circle and applied pre-emergent to landscape beds at the Annex.
- Crews completed landscape improvements at the Community Theatre, including removing dead and struggling plant material and installing verbena, autumn sage, and coneflower in the memorial and building beds.
- Staff prepared two athletic fields for scheduled games/events, including preparation of the Lions Park baseball field.
- Staff installed available new field signage at Harrington, Lions, Alexander, and Lakeside Parks. Additional signage will be ordered for Harrington, and a signpost will be installed for the Lakeside Multipurpose Field.
- Crews inspected athletic facilities for wasp activity and treated multiple nests around bleachers, benches, restrooms, storage areas, and BBI Fields 6 & 7. Staff will return to address remaining nests that could not be safely accessed.
Recreation Center
Facility Highlight – Friday Nights at the Rec
Friday nights at the Duncanville Recreation Center offer something for guests of all ages. Activities include Tai Chi with Dr. Hearne, Ping Pong Skills & Drills with Coach Jimmy, Pilates and Yoga with Instructor Noemi, and Open Play Volleyball.
For guests looking for something more relaxed, the Game Room features amenities including a PS5, Nintendo Switch, pool tables, foosball, and more. Friday nights continue to provide the community with a variety of activities and amenities at a family-friendly price, creating an affordable opportunity for families and friends to spend time together at the Recreation Center.
Facility Highlight – GI Soldier Basketball Tournament
This past weekend, the Recreation Center welcomed the GI Soldier 2-Day Basketball Tournament as an overflow facility for games from the Duncanville Fieldhouse. The tournament provided teenage boys and girls with an opportunity to compete in a competitive basketball environment.
This marked the first time GI Soldier hosted a tournament in the City of Champions, and the organization expressed interest in returning for future tournaments. The event provided another opportunity to maximize facility use while welcoming new athletes, families, and organizations to Duncanville.

Festival de las Américas

Armstrong Park
Festival de las Américas is Duncanville's celebration of Hispanic and Latin American cultures, featuring live music, cultural performances, authentic cuisine, artisan vendors, family activities, a community parade, and a classic car show. Formerly the Best Southwest Hispanic Heritage Festival, the event has been rebranded to establish a signature annual cultural celebration unique to Duncanville.
Planning remains on schedule with key entertainment secured, including EZ Band as the headliner, Mariachi Las Alteñas, and Dariel Amant. Additional cultural performers are being finalized, while vendor, food truck, parade, and sponsorship recruitment continue through Eventeny.
Staff is coordinating event logistics with City departments, including public safety, public works, traffic control, volunteer coordination, site layout, and VIP accommodations to ensure a safe and successful event.
Marketing efforts are underway with the launch of the new Festival de las Américas brand, supported by social media, digital advertising, community outreach, printed materials, and bilingual promotions. The campaign is focused on increasing regional awareness and positioning the festival as one of Duncanville's premier annual community events.
Staff will continue finalizing operational plans, entertainment, sponsorships, and volunteer assignments in preparation for the event.

- The Planning and Zoning department presented two items at the August 4 City Council meeting. One item was approved; one was denied.
- The Planning and Zoning Commission held a meeting on Monday, August 10 for two items.
PUBLIC WORKS
Construction Notice
The City of Duncanville is starting construction! Please anticipate increased traffic and delays in the area. Construction will begin on April 25, 2026, with an estimated completion in mid-May 2027. Please note that rocky soil conditions and weather can impact the scheduled timeline.
Who: Residents of Duncanville
What: The project consists of the reconstruction of roadway paving, drainage, water, wastewater, sidewalk, and pedestrian improvements.
Where: North Cedar Ridge Drive from Cathy Self-Morgan Way/Middale to W. Camp Wisdom Road.
When: April 25, 2026, through mid-May 2027.
Why: To repair the roadway and utilities that have exceeded their lifetime and provide better service and safety to the residents and public.
Public Works Engineering
- Continued construction activities on the Cedar Ridge Drive Road Reconstruction Project (RFB 25-0014), including installation of the sanitary sewer main (SS-C) and ongoing utility coordination.
- Modified the temporary traffic control configuration to improve traffic flow and enhance driver safety while maintaining access through the construction zone.
- Continued oversight of Right-of-Way permitting contractor registrations, utility coordination, and construction inspections.
Engineering Division
Cedar Ridge Road Reconstruction & Utility Improvements – RFB 25-0014
- Continued field oversight and documentation of sanitary sewer construction and associated manhole work.
- Camp Wisdom West / Forest Hills ADA Ramps
- Projects remain in closeout status.
- Awaiting contractor notice/certification of completion, where applicable, so final inspections can be scheduled.
- Continued tracking outstanding restoration and punch-list requirements before final acceptance.
- Right-of-Way Permitting / MGO
- Continued processing ROW contractor registrations and permit applications through the MGO portal.
- Clarified that contractors applying for ROW permits must be properly registered as Right-of-Way Contractors and provide the required insurance, bonds, and authorization documentation.
Street Division
- Crews located 18 utility storm drain inlets at various locations throughout the city.
- Crews removed tree limbs and small branches obstructing alleyway traffic behind Barrymore Lane to Heather Run Drive and cleared additional obstructions on Santa Fe Trail and Longworth Boulevard.
- Crew applied weed killer spray along the Big Stone Gap Road sidewalk wall between Green Hills Road and South Greenstone Lane.
- Crews repaired nine potholes at various locations throughout the city.
- Crew removed abandoned refrigerators from the roadway on Blueridge Drive and Crystal Springs Drive.
- Crews cleaned four storm drain basket grate inlets on West Danieldale Road and South Clark Road.
- Crew removed two box‑spring mattresses and one headframe with sideboards from the creek flowline on Cedar Hill Road and North Joe Wilson Road.
