City of Duncanville Announces Opening of Arts Grant Application Cycle
The City of Duncanville is proud to announce the opening of its first Arts Grant Application Cycle, which begins June 4, 2025, and runs through June 30, 2025. BUILDING INSPECTIONS |
- A total of 14 Rental inspections were scheduled this week;5 passed, 9 failed, and 0 were canceled. The primary reasons for the failed inspections were the absence of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection, missing carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, ground rods, and water heaters not up to current code.
- 5 Single-Family Rental Certificates of Occupancy have been reissued for this week, and 0 apartment units.
- There were 58 total Building inspections this week. 38 inspections passed, 14 failed, 6 canceled, and 0 partially passed. This week, there were 6 total health inspections: 1 for the annual renewal, 1 for the health certificate of occupancy, 0 for the annual swimming pool inspections, 4 routine health inspections, and 0 health complaints on businesses.
- The total amount of fees collected was $ 15,877.00

Fight the Bite
To prevent the spread of mosquitoes, residents should remove all areas of standing water. Residents should also report all pools that are not well maintained and abandoned homes where mosquitoes are likely to breed to either City of Duncanville Health Services by calling (972) 780-5000 or through the OurDuncanville app, available on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
Everyone should continue to protect themselves against the West Nile Virus by using insect repellent containing DEET. Citizens are also encouraged to remain indoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

Fire Administration
Last week, the Duncanville Fire Department participated in honoring Korean War Veteran Corporal Billie Driver, along with public safety personnel and City Officials, with a large American Flag attached to Quint 272 over Danieldale Drive.
- Attended Rotary Club of Duncanville and Duncanville Lions Club meetings.
- Provided personnel and equipment to support the Fire Truck Pull event to fund Special Olympics.
- Attended Computer Assisted Dispatch – Record Management System meeting
- Facilitated Community Emergency Response Team meeting.
- Attended Bond Committee meeting.
- Attended budget meetings
- Attended the City of DeSoto Fire Academy graduation.
- Attended the City Council meeting.
- Met with City of DeSoto and Cedar Hill Fire Chiefs to discuss improving Blocker Truck responses to accident scenes by supporting the Southwest Regional Communications Center.
- Met with the Building Maintenance Department to get quotes on various Station 2 repairs

This week, the Emergency Management (EM) team participated in the following events:
- The Emergency Management Team (EMT) participated in the Duncanville Fire Truck Pull event by setting up a table with emergency preparedness information and teaching hands-only CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).
- EMT attended the Dallas County Volunteer Reception Center (VRC) meeting to assist in VRC plan updates.
- EMT attended the Duncanville Special Event Permit Workshop.

On Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Jorge Fuentes from JSE Drywall and Painting generously supplied food to the officers as a gesture of appreciation.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, June 3 and June 4, 2025, Duncanville Police Administration cooked for the on-duty staff to express their appreciation for their dedication and hard work.
PERSONNEL
- Our five 5 Police Academy recruits are progressing well, with two of them set to graduate on Monday June 9, 2025.
- The Duncanville Police Department hired two recruits last week, Nahum Escudero Castilla and Quincy Denham. Both will begin employment on Monday, June 16, 2025.
- The court process related to a Duncanville Police Department Narcotics investigation from 2022 concluded last week. In 2022, a search warrant was executed at a local auto body shop that uncovered a large clandestine methamphetamine conversion lab and bulk quantities of methamphetamine that had been recently smuggled from Mexico and concealed inside plastic pallets. Two Mexican nationals, who were in the country illegally, were found in possession of more than 141 kilograms (310 pounds) of methamphetamine and multiple firearms (pictured above). The methamphetamine was determined to have a street value of nearly $10,000,000.00. The criminal case was filed federally, and both individuals were sentenced to federal prison for 21 years and 20 years, respectively .

Encina is Coming!
We are thrilled to announce that Encina, the beloved Oak Cliff restaurant known for its adventurous menu featuring seasonal Texas ingredients, is expanding to Duncanville! The team behind Encina has officially closed on the historic property at 220 North Main Street, formerly home to Duncanville’s original fire station and later a TV repair shop.
Encina, a collaboration between celebrated chef Matt Balke and seasoned restaurant veteran Corey McCombs, has been a staple in the Bishop Arts District since it is opening in 2020.
The addition of Encina to our downtown area marks a significant milestone in Duncanville’s ongoing economic development and revitalization efforts. We are excited to welcome this esteemed establishment to our community and look forward to the vibrancy it will bring to our historic Main Street.

Keep Waterways Clean Community Cleanup – Saturday, June 21, 2025 | 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM | Waterview Park, 1700 Whitecliff Dr.
- Come out and join other volunteers in cleaning Waterview Park, located at 1700 Whitecliff Dr. The more litter we remove, the less stormwater runs off into our creeks, waterways, and eventually into the oceans. Cleanup supplies will be provided on-site.

- Crews assisted with the Duncanville Fire Truck Pull Event.
- Staff coordinated with the new Equipment Services Superintendent, Darren Juhase to procure City of Duncanville Parks Trucks lightbars.
- Crews met with Animal Control regarding concerns of dogs being at the splash pad.
- Crews installed QR (Quick Response) code signage for the Perry Weather equipment at Armstrong Park. This allows real-time updates when the lightning detector is triggered and lets patrons know how much time is left before they can safely return once the 30-minute lightning-free window has passed. It also explains other weather info and the functions of the Perry Weather system, including what the flashing light and horn signals mean.
- Staff met with the Duncanville Police Department regarding the Little Free Library damage at Lions Park.
- Crews installed wildflower area signs at Oriole Park.
- Crews coordinated mowing contractors to go back and mow the curb strip at Oriole Park.
- Crews picked up branches at Willow Run and Alexander Parks.
- A new camera and alarm have been installed at the City of Duncanville Parks Facility
- Crews planted new vincas in the hanging baskets on Main Street.
- Crews added mulch to flower beds along the Main Street Corridor.
- Installed the sod at Armstrong Park.

The Brush Club with Estefany—Learn brush techniques, color mixing, layering, and composition at the Brush Club with Estefany. No experience is needed, and all supplies are provided. CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Training—Come learn CPR for your family, job, school, summer adventure, or holiday gathering! Be ready when it matters most. Emergencies can happen at any time, anywhere, and to anyone. The Family and Friends CPR Course is $25.00 per person. Duncanville 300 Jr. Grand Prix – Saturday, June 7, 2025 | 11:00 AM –1:00 PM
Join us on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the Duncanville Recreation Center for this year’s Duncanville 300 Jr. Grand Prix event. We have just over 10 Big Wheel tricycles for races that will take place upstairs on the walking track. In addition, we will build a mini track for the tikes on the west court in the gym. Lastly, we will have obstacle courses, prizes, popcorn, candy, and water for spectators. Admission is FREE. Contact the Recreation Center at (972) 780-5070 for more information.

Planning and Zoning

The Planning and Zoning Department has engaged planning consultants to support and assist during staffing shortages. These consultants will review and advise on planning-related matter as required. The Economic Development staff is responsible for gathering information and facilitating its transfer to the consultants.
- The public hearing for the Planning and Zoning meeting on Tuesday, May 12, 2025, has been continued to Monday, June 9, 2025, at 7:00 PM.
- Proposed New Development at the Corner of Cockrell Hill Road and Danieldale Road (Life School)
- The applicant was scheduled for the June 3, 2024, Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission meeting for Planned Development (PD) request; the item was removed from the agenda; future date to be determined.
- A Town Hall Meeting occurred on August 13, 2024.
- Staff met with the applicant on August 26, 2024. Additional items are required before the applicant can be scheduled for a Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission meeting.
- The city emailed the applicant on September 6, 2024. City staff commented that a consulting firm will review traffic impact analysis; however, the firm will be expected to contract with the City of Duncanville after the turn of the fiscal year. To expedite the review, the City staff would be open to agreeing with the applicant to contract a firm to review the traffic impact analysis.
- The applicant submitted a plat application on September 20, 2024. A third party is currently reviewing the plat.
- On October 10, 2024, the applicant submitted a traffic impact analysis from a third-party reviewer to the city.
- On October 22, 2024, there was a meeting between staff and applicants.
- The city agreed to hire a third party to review the project's zoning and engineering.
- The third party met with staff on December 17, 2024, to discuss comments.
- The third-party reviewers met with staff and the applicant on January 14, 2025, to discuss the latest comments.
- Planning & Zoning Public Hearing was held on May 12, 2025.
- Planning & Zoning meetings have been continued to June 9, 2025.
