Solid Waste Cart Pilot Project Update
The cart pilot project began with trash pickup on Monday, April 7, 2025, in the 3 neighborhoods selected for the test. Staff met with Republic representatives this week to compare notes and get a status brief from Republic. Overall, the first week has gone very well with few complaints or issues noted. Highlights are:
- City staff received some additional door-side assistance requests. A couple of the requests were resolved through alternative solutions (e.g., location of cart), and 3 additional door-side assistance locations were added.
- Republic Services received 3 emails last week through the dedicated email address. All 3 emails requested carts, but the residences were not in the test neighborhoods.
- Staff have also received a few telephone calls from residents, some of whom are asking for carts. One complaint was about the carts' color and size.
- Republic reported that most residents are using the carts, and only a few are still putting bags out. In one case, the resident stopped the driver and explained they had forgotten to use the cart.
- Republic is gathering weight information on trash pickup and will begin sending it to staff next week. We hope this information will help determine whether trash pickup is required twice a week or could be reduced to once a week.
- Staff and Republic discussed having another Town Hall meeting of the test neighborhoods in late May to answer any questions, learn about experiences, and any issues that may have arisen, etc. No date has been established yet.
